Obama’s foreign oil plan

22Oct07

Sen. Barack Obama, US Democratic presidential candidate from Illinois, has proposed a plan that will require power companies - and polluting industries in general - to pay for their emissions. Obama hopes that it will cut emissions to the levels of 1990 by 2020.

A national cap on emissions will also be imposed, and $150 billion is to be invested in the development of alternative energy sources, aimed at reducing US foreign-oil depency by 35% before 2030.

“No business will be allowed to emit any greenhouse gases for free,” Obama said in Portsmouth, N.H, according to The New York Times. “Businesses don’t own the sky, the public does, and if we want them to stop polluting it, we have to put a price on all pollution.”
