SurfaceTension was created in 2007 as a way for those with a love for writing and for the environment to do a variety of neat things: hone their writing skills, vent their frustration, engage in activism and build a wide-ranging general knowledge of the forces at work in the world today in terms of sustainability, ecology, climate change, green technologies such as alternative energy sources and clean cars. Does this sound like you? Please join me in my quest, either in writing for SurfaceTension or in spreading the word. Currently no-one knows about SurfaceTension, hence the non-existant readership and lack of comments, but there certainly is a demand for blogs like these. All that’s needed is to get the word out. If you look at the blogroll, you’ll find a variety of blogs that are similar in intented audience and content, but not quite the mix that SurfaceTension aims to bring forward.
The Name
The name not only describes a natural phenomenon, but also tries to capture the current changing sociopolitical landscape of the world: a greater awareness (a spreading tension, if you will) about the environment and the need to preserve it better than we currently do. There is indeed a mounting tension in the minds of Earth’s dominant species, living on its surface, about the planet’s fate.
Me
My name is Conrad Hofmeyr and I’m from Cape Town. I’m currently studying EECS. My interest in the topics discussed here inspired me to start this blog, but I almost found the highly satisfying advantages outlined in the first paragraph to be unexpected bonuses, making it increasingly worthwhile to pursue it as a part-time activity.
